Seek to Desire Nothing
by Lord Gryffyn
"Seek
to desire nothing". It has taken me a lot of thought
to understand the depth of this little statement. First
came the realizations that all things, which exist, are
transitory and the only true reality is the Divine
Creatrix, which is beyond manifestation. Then came the
understanding that part of the Divine resides within us. We
call this the Divine Spark, the Mabon Child, the Child of
Promise, the Child of Light, the Christos, and many other
names. We call the infinite by the names of Goddess and
God. We can not talk about something that is infinite with
a finite language, so we have created these manifestations
of the infinite so that we might better understand this
part of ourselves.
In the Kabbalah, these two aspects
(Goddess and God) are named Binah and Chokmah. They are the
primary and first manifestations of Kether (Divinity) and
are separated from Kether by a void. In order to reach
Kether, a person must travel up the Tree and eventually
face and cross this void. They must lose their physical
body, leave the world of illusion behind, and become simply
their immortal, divine spark. To reunite with Kether, with
the Divine, is the singular goal of our Spark and the only
true desire then is to desire that which cannot
be obtained in a physical body, to be one with the
Divine.
In order to do this we must become
nothing, or "no-thing"; we must cease to exist in a
material sense. We let go of our ego, our personal will,
and the illusion of being. We must make of ourselves a
"zero", a nil, the AIN. The circle is our symbol for both
zero and for infinity. At once both nothing and everything.
It is only out of nothing that something can arise. We seek
our center; our hearts core where we can, for a moment,
touch the Divine. How will you know when you have reached
this part of you? When you feel like you are sitting in a
dark soundless room with your eyes wide open and attentive
ears, waiting to hear the voiceless voice within you sing.
Then you will have touched your Divine Spark, the source of
all your magick.
Light a candle. The flame is a
symbol of Divine Will, and of the Divine Spark that resides
in each of us. It is born out of nothingness, for if you
look closely at the flame it does not touch its source. The
candle is a symbol of Absence. Just as the candle must
disappear for the flame to burn, so must you shed your
illusions of ego and personal will and allow the flame of
the Goddess' Will to shine through. Learn to be as the
candle, to become no-thing so your Divine Light may lead
others out of their darkness. In the old days a magick
circle's boundary was where the Balefire's light ceased and
the darkness began. Witches are drawn to the edges of
things, to borders and doorways and passages. Be a witch
and stand at that gray point, not in the light or the dark,
but of the light and from the dark, as a guide to those yet
to come.
